As Shaker Square opens, the 1929 stock market crash threatens its future. Then, starting in the 1950s, social changes in the neighborhoods around the Square alter who feels “welcome” there - an evolution that is still unfolding. A developer reflects on his late-1990s attempt to remake the Square as a high-end lifestyle center.
